People return home after Craghead allotment fire

Residents are being allowed to return to their homes after a cordon put in place during a fire in County Durham was reduced.

Emergency services were called just after midnight and found a workshop at allotments in Craghead, near Stanley, well alight.

Due to concern over gas cylinders, a 200m cordon was put in place.

About 60 people had to spend the night at an emergency rest centre, which was set up at Craghead Village Hall.

A Durham Police spokesman said that a joint investigation into the cause of the fire was being carried out with Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
