County Durham road reopens after WWII shell uncovered

A road in County Durham was closed after an unexploded WWII shell was found.

The shell was found on land at Slaidburn Road, Stanley, near the A693 Chester Road.

Durham Police advised people to avoid the area, closing Chester Road and evacuating a local bus depot and nearby garage as a precaution.

Catterick's bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion and all cordons have now been lifted.
