Woman in hospital after Gateshead flat fire rescue

A woman had to be rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in the bedroom of a flat in Gateshead.

Twenty firefighters were called to tackle the blaze in the upstairs property in Weatherall Gardens in Beacon Lough late on Friday night.

The woman had to be led to safety from the living room and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire service said the flat was severely damaged.
