North Tyneside Council hold library fine amnesty

North Tyneside Council is to hold a fines amnesty as part of National Libraries Day.

The local authority is taking the action as almost 12,000 items, including books, CDs and DVDs, are now beyond their return dates.

On 4 February any overdue item can be returned to one of the council's libraries, with outstanding fines waived.

It is hoped the move will encourage people back into using the facilities.

Last year the borough's libraries took on average about £620 per week in fines.
