Policeman assaulted in Gateshead with bladed weapon

A police officer suffered injuries to his head and arm when he was assaulted with a bladed weapon in Gateshead.

The incident took place at Ryton Cemetery, on Cushy Cow Lane, Ryton, at about 20:30 GMT on Tuesday.

The neighbourhood officer, 39, approached two men who were acting suspiciously in the graveyard and was assaulted by one of them.

He was taken to hospital and later released to recover at home.

The first man is white, wore dark clothing and a woolly hat, is aged in his late teens or early 20s, between 5ft 10in and 5ft 11in tall and of a thin build.

The second man is also white, wore dark clothing and a woollen hat, is in his late teens or early 20s, about 5ft 8in tall and of thin build.

Ch Supt Graham Davis, area commander for Gateshead, said: "This was an attack on a well known and respected Neighbourhood officer and violence of this nature, towards members of the public or our officers, will not be tolerated."
