A fire at a Durham car showroom caused damage costing £1.5m, fire crews said.

Firefighters were called to the Evans Halshaw dealership in Alma Place, Gilesgate, shortly after 04:30 GMT.

Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines were originally sent but it was later increased to 10 plus aerial platforms.

Ten nearby houses were evacuated and residents of a nursing home were moved to alternative accommodation. There are no reports of injuries.

Durham Police said roads around the scene were closed and diversions were set up.

Firefighters said they managed to save about £100,000 of vehicles on the forecourt.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigators are due to go into the building over the weekend.
