Tyne-Wear derby: Police issue transport plea

Police have urged Sunderland fans heading to Newcastle for Sunday's derby to use dedicated transport.

Free coaches and a special Metro service have been laid on, but due to engineering works there will be no Northern Rail train service.

In a bid to cut disorder, the kick-off has been brought forward to 12:00 GMT.

Northumbria Police said it had worked with both clubs and supporters' associations to ensure families could enjoy the match in a safe environment.

A spokesman added: "As with any high profile event attracting thousands of people there will be a substantial police presence to prevent any disorder and ensure that anyone committing offences is dealt with firmly but fairly."
