A derelict bar has collapsed in South Shields, forcing police to close the road outside.

Emergency crews were called to Bizz Bar in Ocean Road, just after 17:30 GMT after the building caved in.

Fire chiefs said they did not believe anyone was in the building - which is undergoing renovation work - at the time of the collapse.

Nearby guest house owner Hani Gazia said it sounded like a "bomb" was going off as the building fell into the road.

He said: "The building had been empty for about three years - there was nobody in it at the time as far I could see.

"It was like a bomb had fallen on it - there was debris all over the road.

"All we can see now are a lot of police and fire brigade trying to sort things out."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "A cordon has been set up and local traffic diversions are in place.

"The incident is ongoing and people are asked to avoid the area for the present time."
