A Premier League footballer accused of damaging cars in Newcastle city centre has had the case against him dropped.

Sunderland striker Nicklas Bendtner, 24, faced five charges of criminal damage, in relation to an incident in Stowell Street on 6 December.

The prosecution offered no evidence against him and magistrates in Newcastle cleared him of the charges.

He was originally charged with teammate Lee Cattermole, whose case has been adjourned for two weeks.

Bendtner, a Danish international, is currently on loan at the club from Arsenal.

He did not appear in court for the hearing.
