Six arrested in UK child protection operation

Six men have been arrested in Tyneside, Wearside and County Durham on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.

Officers from Northumbria Police and the Serious Organised Crime Agency searched houses in Gateshead and Sunderland and arrested four men.

A number of computers and mobile phones were seized in the raids.

A 46-year-old man from Bishop Auckland and another, 55, from Peterlee were also arrested.

The men were detained as part of a UK-wide operation aimed at protecting children and young people.

All six were later bailed pending further inquiries.

Cumbria Police executed a search warrant at a house in Carlisle and seized computer equipment, but no arrests were made.
