Woman raped on Whitley Bay beach

A 36-year-old woman was raped on a North Tyneside beach, police said.

Northumbria Police said the woman went to the beach at Whitley Bay with a man she had met in Pier 39 in the town and was attacked at 02:25 BST on Sunday.

They said he told the victim he was from the Leeds area and was white, in his mid-30s and 5ft 4ins to 5ft 5ins.

Det Insp Paul Race, from Northumbria Police's Rape Investigation Team, appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
