Stephenson Clarke Shipping goes into liquidation

A Newcastle-based firm thought to be Britain's oldest shipping company has gone into liquidation with the loss of nine jobs.

Stephenson Clarke Shipping had been badly hit by the recession, liquidators said.

The business was established by brothers Ralph and Robert Clarke during the reign of King George II in 1730.

A spokesman for the firm said the decision to cease trading was made with "great regret".
