The first break-in happened in Station Road, Kenton Bank Foot, in Newcastle, on Saturday night.

A second break-in happened hours later, in near-by Thornbury Close, when a 48-year-old man was attacked.

A man has been charged with two counts of aggravated burglary and is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court.

Four men and a woman arrested in connection with the burglary inquiry have been bailed pending further inquiries.
