Elderly Cleadon Village couple tied up by jewel raiders

An elderly couple were tied up in their South Tyneside home while raiders made off with cash and jewellery.

The couple, who have not been named, were not seriously hurt during the raid on Saturday evening in Cleadon Village, near South Shields.

Three men who forced their way in escaped with what police said was a "large amount" of cash and jewellery.

A police spokesman said the couple were threatened and "extremely distressed" but otherwise unharmed.
