A man has died after he fell at a medieval castle.

The 50-year-old man, who worked at Warkworth Castle and Hermitage in Northumberland, fell at the castle's keep - a fortified tower - on Tuesday morning.

He was airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary where he has since died, police said.

The castle, an English Heritage site, will not open to the public again until Thursday.

The building was once home to the Percy family of powerful earls dating back to the 9th Century.

An English Heritage spokeswoman said: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of a member of staff at Warkworth Castle.

"He was highly regarded by all his friends and colleagues here and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family at this time."
