Gateshead man charged over police officer dog attack

A man has been charged after a police officer was attacked by a dog in Gateshead.

The woman was responding to reports of an assault in the town's Marsden Grove on Sunday, when she was bitten by a bull mastiff-type dog.

She remains in hospital and is being treated for a serious leg wound.

A 55-year-old man, from Ebchester Avenue, Gateshead has been charged with wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

He is due before magistrates later.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said the officer, who has not been named, had undergone surgery and was in a "satisfactory" condition.

He said the dog had been removed to a kennel.
