Durham city crash death man 'taken ill at the wheel'

A driver has died after being taken ill at the wheel and colliding with another car in Durham city, police said.

Officers said a passerby at the scene of the accident at Mountjoy roundabout tried to save him by giving first aid.

The driver, believed to be in his 70s, was driving a Vauxhall Astra and was taken to hospital but confirmed dead a short time later.

Durham Police said the road had reopened following the earlier accident which led to diversions for two hours.

A force spokesman said: "When police arrived paramedics were treating the driver of the Astra, having taken over from a passerby who was first on the scene and gave initial first aid.

"He was then taken by ambulance to the University Hospital North Durham where he was confirmed dead."
