Martin Li jailed for fatal A695 crash in Northumberland
A car mechanic has been jailed for eight years for causing the death by dangerous driving of an 18-year-old woman while driving at 130mph.
Passenger Lucy Duggan, from Wall, died after the head-on crash on the A695 at Dilston, Northumberland on 25 August.
Newcastle Crown Court heard Martin Li had been driving at 130mph in a 60mph zone when the crash happened.
Li, 22, of Ash Close, Hexham, was jailed for eight years after admitting six driving offences.
Judge John Evans said what he did was "complete madness".
A statement released on behalf of Miss Duggan's parents Ralph and Barbara and brother Jack, after the sentencing, said: "The devastating accident that took our wonderful daughter has rocked our world and shattered so many precious dreams.
"She lived her life in full confidence that everything would be ok and we have tried to draw from her positive outlook to get us through."
The court heard that Li "floored" the accelerator, at one point overtaking two vehicles in a single manoeuvre, and said the bends were his "favourite bit".
As he approached a sharp left turn, Li crossed over to the other side of the road but, after returning to the correct side of the road, he skidded across the carriageway and smashed into an oncoming vehicle, the court heard.
Li admitted causing death by dangerous driving, four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and making a false statement to obtain insurance.
Two of Li's other passengers and a mother and daughter in the other car were seriously hurt in the crash.
Sgt Phil Patterson, of Northumbria Police, said Li had played "Russian roulette" with Miss Duggan's life.
He said: "Martin Li's driving that day was the worst I have had to investigate in 15 years.
"He had a total disregard for other people's safety and his driving was the equivalent to playing Russian roulette, driving at speed on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend.
"While this is a significant sentence, it does not reflect the loss suffered by Lucy's family."
