Killed taxi passenger identified as Myles Turnbull

A man killed as he got out of a taxi in Gateshead has been named by police as Myles Turnbull.

The 41-year-old had been getting out of the taxi with a teenage boy at about 02:00 GMT when the accident happened in Dunston Road.

Northumbria Police said it was thought Mr Turnbull was struck by a vehicle. The road was shut for several hours.

A 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail.

Northumbria Police Ch Insp Jerry Pearson, said the investigation was in the "very early stages" and police were working to establish how the man died.
