The parents of a 12-year-old boy who was hit by a bus in Sunderland have thanked people who tried to help him at the scene.

Matthew Hayes, of Moorside, died on Ryhope Street South, near the Asda supermarket, on Friday afternoon.

His parents said in a statement: "We know there were a lot of people at the scene, including schoolfriends, members of the public and emergency services.

"We know everyone did their best to try to save Matthew."

The Year 8 pupil at Venerable Bede Church Of England Academy had been on his way home from school at the time.

Head teacher Gill Booth said everyone at the school was in a state of shock.

The Archdeacon of Sunderland, the Venerable Stuart Bain, said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and we offer them our prayers and deepest sympathy at this sad time."
