Cyclist dies when struck by night bus in Gateshead

A cyclist suffered fatal injuries when he was hit by a night bus in Gateshead in the early hours, police have said.

David James was struck by the Go North East vehicle on its way to Durham City as he cycled along Shipcote Lane just after 03:00 GMT.

Police said the 35-year-old of Deckham, was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

A spokesman for the bus firm said a full investigation would take place. Police appealed for witnesses.
