Sunderland Royal Hospital TB alert: All babies cleared

All the babies tested for tuberculosis after an alert at Sunderland Royal Hospital have been given the all-clear.

The 41 infants were being treated at the neo-natal unit between May and August when they came into contact with someone with the condition.

City Hospitals of Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust said the risk of infection was extremely low, and the recall for screening was a precaution.

The trust said it was pleased all the results were negative, as expected.

A spokeswoman said it was "important that we undertook the screening and assessment process" and added that the trust apologised to parents for the distress and anxiety caused.
