Plans for Northumbria Police headquarters to be sold off for housing are being put out to consultation.

The police and crime commissioner is submitting a planning application for the Ponteland site.

Vera Baird claimed reorganisation was needed to maintain the number of officers and staff working in neighbourhoods.

The former Police Authority had already decided to relocate most services away from the centralised base.

If the initial application is approved further permission will be needed on specific proposals for new buildings.

Comments can be submitted until 26 February.
