Construction work has begun on an £11m leisure centre in Washington, near Sunderland.

The complex, which will feature two water slides and a six-lane pool, is being built adjacent to an existing centre, which is due to close in 2015.

Labour-controlled Sunderland City Council said the cost would be met from an existing £60m capital fund.

The centre will also feature a four-court sports hall, squash courts, sauna and steam rooms.

John Kelly, the authority's portfolio holder for public health and culture, said: "The current leisure centre was great when it was built, but it has reached the end of its natural lifespan and this investment will secure new, high-quality facilities for generations to come."
