Operation Sanctuary police charge man with rape of girl

A man has been charged with rape as part of an investigation into allegations of sexual crime against vulnerable women and girls on Tyneside.

The man, 22, was held over an alleged rape in Newcastle on 17 February.

Police said he had now been charged with two counts of rape of a female under 16. He will appear before Newcastle magistrates later.

There have been 67 arrests and 10 people charged since Operation Sanctuary's launch in January.

Police have identified about 80 women and girls who are potential victims.
