North Shields centre offers offshore survival skills

15 July 2014 Last updated at 07:45 BST

Thousands of workers will be able to prepare for the perils of life at sea thanks to a new offshore survival centre on Tyneside.

The £2.5m facility will train rig workers to deal with emergencies ranging from fires to helicopter crashes.

It is hoped the base, run by AIS in North Shields, will boost the region's role in the offshore oil, gas and wind industries.
