The first phase of a £100m regeneration plan for South Shields has been given the go-ahead.

Proposals to build a new library and digital media centre in Ferry Street were approved by South Tyneside Council's planning committee.

Work on the project, which will include a 40-space car park on Harton Quay, is expected to start in the new year.

The plan, called South Shields 365, also includes a cinema and culture centre.

Councillor John Anglin, lead member for regeneration and economy, said: "This project is going to inject new vitality into the town.

"We anticipate that the central library and digital media centre will attract visitors from across the region."
