A girl who was dragged into the grounds of a church in North Tyneside and raped is "traumatised", police said.

The victim was in Park Lane, Shiremoor, when a boy in his early teens dragged her into the grounds of St Mark's Church and attacked her.

Northumbria Police said the victim was deeply distressed and was being supported by trained officers.

The attack happened on Monday at about 20:00 BST, but the girl has only just reported it to police.

Det Sgt Donna Rose said: "An unknown male approached the teenager and forcibly led her towards St Mark's Church and raped her in the grounds of the church.

"This was an extremely traumatic experience for this young girl. We have specially trained officers who are working with her, offering support to her and her family at this difficult time.

"Reports of this nature of obviously concerning and we're doing everything possible to establish exactly what happened."
