A shopkeeper managed to fight off a machete-wielding raider in an attempted robbery that was caught on CCTV.

The worker at Man & Sons newsagents in Eden Vale, Sunderland, seized a pole usually used to close shutters to repel the masked intruder.

The machete raider made several thrusts at the shop worker in the raid on Saturday morning but eventually gave up and fled from the shop.

The shopkeeper suffered an injury to his hand.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "The footage is clearly distressing as it shows the man going in armed with the machete and struggling with the shopkeeper.

"This sort of incident is extremely unusual in the area and I'd like to reassure people we're doing everything we can to trace the man in the CCTV.

"This is why we've released the images: we want people to let us know who this is."
