A man's body has been found in a flat that was gutted by fire in Sunderland.

Firefighters responded to a 999 call from a man trapped in an upper flat on Northcote Avenue, in the Hendon area, late on Tuesday.

After he was rescued, crews entered the badly damaged ground floor flat and discovered a dead man, later named as 35-year-old Kevin Gray.

The cause of the fire is being investigated but it is not thought to be suspicious.

The resident of the upstairs flat was taken to hospital for treatment for non life-threatening injuries.
