Police investigating the rape and sexual assault of two teenage girls in a park in Sunderland have released CCTV images of a man they need to speak to.

It is thought the 16-year-old girl was raped and her 15-year-old female friend was sexually assaulted in Mowbray Park at about 19:00 GMT on Monday.

Police believe the man may have been in the Bridges shopping centre before the attack.

He was wearing a distinctive blue and white hat and an electric blue jacket.

Supt Ged Noble said the force had spoken to a "number of local people, local businesses and checked hours and hours of CCTV" from all around the city centre.

He said: "We are now are in a position to release CCTV images of a man who we believe can help us with our inquiries.

"I'd urge him or anyone who knows him to come forward as soon as possible.

"From the footage and the descriptions we have of the man we think he is in his 30s or 40s, of medium build and has a greying beard. He is not believed to be white British, the victims described him as being Asian, however we are unsure of his exact ethnicity."
