Eric and Carol Ruddy deaths: Man arrested in Newcastle

A man has been arrested over the deaths of a man and a woman in the Elswick area of Newcastle.

Eric Ruddy, 64 and his 54-year-old wife Carol, were found with serious injuries at a their home in Bentinck Street at 10:25 GMT on Friday.

They were taken to the city's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where they were later pronounced dead.

Police said a 28-year-old man, who was also taken to hospital with less serious injuries, was arrested.

A force spokesman said the three people were known to each other and the deaths were being treated as suspicious.

No details of how the pair died have been released, but a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later. Police have appealed for witnesses.

Det Ch Insp Andy Fairlamb added: "Police are treating the deaths as suspicious and are asking for help from the community in order to piece together the events that led up this incident."
