Police have begun searching the River Wear amid growing concern for the welfare of a missing Durham University student from Nottingham.

Euan Coulthard, 19, was last seen in the city centre just after midnight on Wednesday after leaving a nightclub.

He was captured on CCTV on Framwellgate Bridge, and soon afterwards his mobile phone was powered down.

Friends raised the alarm on Thursday after he had failed to respond to texts and social media messages.

Ch Insp Sue Robinson, from Durham Police, said: "This is the first opportunity for us to make a search of the river.

"Over the past two days the river has been high and very fast-flowing.

"Information from friends and CCTV indicate he was last sighted in this area.

"We are concentrating on the area where he was last seen, however, we are also making an appeal for anyone who had a sighting of him to contact is.

"This is still an active missing person inquiry."
