Couple take grenade to police in Washington

A car park was cordoned off after an elderly couple tried to drop off a hand grenade at a police station.

The couple had arrived at Washington police station shortly before 11:00 GMT to hand in a number of items.

After seeing the grenade in the car boot, officers cordoned off the car park and a neighbouring road.

Northumbria Police said the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit removed the grenade and carried out a controlled explosion.

All cordons have been lifted.
