South Shields Murder arrest: Man held over death of woman

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a woman on South Tyneside.

The 34-year-old woman, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at a property in Devonshire Street, South Shields, at 05:12 GMT on Saturday.

Northumbria Police said the arrested man was known to the dead woman.

A force spokesman said that the incident had been referred to the police watchdog due to a history of police contact with the woman.

"Officers are currently in the area carrying out inquiries and offering reassurance to the public," he said.

"The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as a matter of course due to a history of police contact with the deceased."
