A schoolboy who was hit and killed by a bus in Newcastle has been named.

Nathan McStay, from Benwell, was pronounced dead at the scene on Whickham View near the junction with Broadmead Way shortly after 15:30 GMT on Wednesday.

The 11-year-old, who was a pupil at nearby Excelsior Academy, had been on foot.

The school's principal Phil Marshall said everyone at the school was "devastated".

'Awful time'

"Our academy is a close-knit community and staff and pupils have been deeply affected by yesterday's tragic accident," Ms Marshall said.

"He was a very likeable and friendly boy. Staff who knew him well were very fond of him. He was well liked by his classmates.

"We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to Nathan's family who are in all our thoughts at this awful time."

Counsellors were offering support to those who needed it, she added.

Transport company Stagecoach confirmed a number 38 bus had been involved.

Police have appealed for witnesses.
