Man charged with arson over Stanley fires

A man has been charged with arson after a series of blazes in County Durham.

Five fires were started on the Poets Estate in Stanley between 03:00 and 05:00 GMT on 14 February, with one at Burnside Primary School two days later.

Durham Police said a 21-year-old was charged with arson with intent to endanger life and attempted arson with intent to endanger life.

The man, from South Stanley, is due to appear at Peterlee Magistrates' Court.

A 26-year-old man arrested last weekend in connection with the fires has been re-bailed pending further enquiries.

An 84-year-old woman was taken to hospital after one of the fires but has since been discharged.
