A teenager has been found guilty of the single-punch killing of a man in Whitley Bay.

Lee Devlin, 40, died in hospital after being found with head injuries next to a walkway near the town's Metro station on 12 September last year.

A 16-year-old boy denied manslaughter but was today found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.

He was given conditional bail ahead of returning to court for sentencing on 13 March.

The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, claimed he was acting in self-defence after Mr Devlin approached him and his friends.

Mr Devlin, who had mental health problems, was described in court as a gentle and popular man.
