A teenager found guilty of killing of a man in Whitley Bay with a single punch has been sentenced to 24 months of detention and training.

Lee Devlin, 40, was found with head injuries near a walkway by the town's Metro station in September last year.

A 16-year-old boy denied manslaughter but was found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.

The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, claimed he was acting in self defence.

Offenders given detention and training orders serve half their sentence in a young offender institution and half supervised in the community.
