'Mephedrone' teenagers taken to hospital in Gateshead

Twelve teenagers have been taken to hospital, with one in a critical condition, after taking what are believed to be illegal drugs.

Police were called to the MetroCentre in Gateshead on Friday evening after five youths became unwell.

Later, a male, 15, was found unconscious at an address in Low Fell, and six others at addresses in Blaydon and Whickham were also hospitalised.

Six people have been arrested and are in custody.

It is thought they had taken Mephedrone and the cases could linked, Northumbria Police said.

Six of the seven teenagers remain in hospital, with one in a critical but stable condition.
