Sir Bobby Robson Foundation: Fundraising total tops £8m
The cancer research charity set up by former Newcastle and England football manager Sir Bobby Robson has raised £8m, organisers have revealed.
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation was set up in 2008 while Sir Bobby, who also managed Ipswich and Barcelona, was receiving treatment for the disease.
He died in 2009 with hopes the foundation would raise £500,000.
Lady Robson said her late husband would have been "stunned" at the success of the foundation.
The foundation works with hospitals on Tyneside to develop new cancer treatments and has already spent millions of pounds on hi-tech equipment.
Lady Robson added: "We're absolutely thrilled by this new fundraising total. It's incredible really.
"We had no idea how well-supported we would be when we launched in 2008. Bob would be stunned."
