A man has denied murdering his parents, who were found badly injured in their home.

Martin Ruddy's father Eric, 64, and mother Carol, 54, were discovered at their house in Elswick, Newcastle, in December.

They later died at the city's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The 28-year-old, from South Tyneside, attended a brief hearing at Newcastle Crown Court where he pleaded not guilty to their murder.

Judge Paul Sloan QC remanded him in custody and adjourned the case until May.
