A boat captain has been fined £5,000 and must complete 120 hours unpaid work after crashing his fishing vessel into a pier.

The Hartlepool-based Grenaa Star struck Tynemouth's South Pier in December 2013.

Robert Trueman admitted contravening regulations by failing to keep lookout.

Trueman, of Rowell Road, Hartlepool, must also pay £4,536 costs and £60 victim surcharge after appearing at Newcastle Crown Court.

The boat beached at Littlehaven in South Shields after striking the pier.

Three people were on board at the time but only Trueman was hurt, requiring hospital treatment for a head injury.

The pier was not badly damaged.
