Five horses have been killed in a fire at a stable block in Sunderland.

Firefighters managed to save 15 others at stables in Coxgreen Road, New Penshaw, early on Monday.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said it was too early to say what had caused the fire. An investigation is under way.

Emma Mold, one of the owners, said it was "absolutely devastating" and "heart wrenching" to be woken up to such a "horrific scene".
