Mobile phone stolen from dying man in South Shields: Teenager detained
A 19-year-old who stole a mobile phone from an unconscious man who later died of hypothermia has been detained.
The 22-year-old victim was slumped in a back lane in South Shields, South Tyneside, in December, when his pockets were rifled and his phone taken.
Scott Stephenson was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution, after earlier pleading guilty to theft.
Dale Walker, 25, who was with him on the night, admitted handling stolen goods and was jailed for 10 months.
The judge at Newcastle Crown Court described the behaviour of the pair, both from South Shields, as "callous".
