Man held over death of pedestrian in Hebburn

A man has been arrested over the death of a pedestrian on South Tyneside.

The 56-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was in collision with a car which failed to stop in Victoria Road West, Hebburn, early on Saturday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the road closed for a time, Northumbria Police said.

A force spokesman added a 39-year-old local man had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was in custody.
