The main route into a Northumberland town which was closed for bridge repair work has reopened ahead of schedule.

The A6079 on Hexham's railway bridge has been shut to traffic since 6 June, leading to significant diversions.

It was due to reopen on Monday, but Network Rail finished the work early.

Northumberland County Council arranged for other essential work, including laying gas pipes and electrical cables, to take place at the same time to avoid further closures at a later date.

Mark Tarry, from Network Rail, thanked the people of Hexham and surrounding communities affected by the closure.

He said: "Our work means the bridge is safe to serve the local community for many years to come and that we have been able to work with other organisations to carry out all this work in one go, rather than digging up the road over a period of several years."
