Newcastle assault victim has life-threatening injuries

A man has been left with life-threatening injuries after a late-night street attack in Newcastle city centre.

The 40-year-old victim was assaulted in Times Square at about 01:15 BST. Northumbria Police said the attacker left the scene before officers arrived.

In a second, unrelated street attack, a 33-year-old man was stabbed outside Lloyds bank at Haymarket Metro station at about midnight.

Police said his injuries were serious but not life threatening.

Three people have been arrested in connection with the stabbing and remain in police custody.
