A man who killed his boyfriend in a fatal assault has been jailed for seven and a half years.

Dean Bowe, 32, was found with a head injury at a flat on South Parade, Whitley Bay on 7 September.

Jonathan Armstrong, 44, of the same address, was found guilty of manslaughter at Newcastle Crown Court and sentenced on Friday.

After his death, Mr Bowe's family said they had been left "reeling from the shock".

Armstrong had been in a relationship with Mr Bowe for a year before the attack, Northumbria Police said.

He had left him unconscious on the floor for more than an hour before seeking help, a force spokeswoman said.

Det Sgt Ian Paxton said Armstrong's treatment of his boyfriend had been "totally inhumane".

"To leave Dean unconscious on the floor for over an hour before calling an ambulance is abhorrent, just to be able to concoct a defence," he said.
