Boy's hand freed from escalator in Washington

A four-year-old boy badly injured his hand when he got it trapped in an escalator at a shopping centre.

More than 20 firefighters were involved in the operation to free the boy at The Galleries, in Washington, on Friday evening.

They used equipment to remove panels and glass from the escalator and to lift the mechanism to release his hand.

The boy was given oxygen before being taken to hospital with "substantial" injuries to his left hand.
